NLMK Group, an international steel company with operations in Russia, the USA and the European Union, has supplied transformer steel to the Siemens Transformers plant based in the city of Voronezh, Central Russia. The steel product will be used to make a transformer for Burnoye Solar-2 solar power park, which is currently under construction in Kazakhstan. Together with Burnoye Solar-1, the first stage of the project, which was launched in 2015, the complex will be one of the largest solar generation facilities in Eastern Europe and the largest in Central Asia.
60,000 tons of hot-rolled steel was manufactured at the Lipetsk production site for the project, with cold-rolling and laser treatment performed at NLMK Group’s VIZ-Steel in Yekaterinburg. Laser treatment delivered a 10% reduction in specific magnetic losses, which ensured electrical equipment manufactured from the steel benefits from increased efficiency.
The transformer steel supplied by NLMK will be used by Siemens Transformers to manufacture a 220 kW 63 MVA transformer. Equipment for the solar park is due for delivery in 2018.
Ilya Gushchin, NLMK Vice President, Sales, said: “We are pleased to continue active cooperation with our key partner, which we’ve been successfully developing since 2015 within large-scale energy projects. NLMK Group has many years of unique experience in manufacturing transformer steel, a leading-edge steel product. Our technology enables us to guarantee high quality and attractive pricing, which helps our customers to be ever more competitive on their markets.”
Burnoye Solar is a successful case of developing sources of renewable energy. Burnoye Solar-1, stage 1 of the solar park project with a capacity of 50 MW, was constructed in 2015. Construction of Burnoye Solar-2, which will have the same capacity as Burnoye Solar-1, will be completed in 2018. The two solar parks will combine to form one of the largest solar generators in Eastern Europe and the biggest in Central Asia. (NLMK/Ukrainian metal)
