KAZ Minerals plans to build a copper smelter near the village of Aktogay in the Abay region. This was announced by Aizhan Balabatyrova, CEO of KAZ Minerals Management.
According to her, the project cost will be determined after the selection of a construction contractor.
The smelter’s capacity will be 300,000 tons of copper per year.
Production is planned to begin in 2030-2031.
In the summer of 2024, China Nonferrous Metal Mining signed an agreement with Kazakhstan’s KAZ Minerals Smelting and NFC Kazakhstan to build a copper smelter in the Abay region.
At that time, the project cost was estimated at $1.5 billion. Production was planned to begin by the end of 2028.
In autumn of 2024, the company announced that in addition to its core products, the plant would produce gold and silver bars, as well as sulfuric acid.
