NLMK Group has delivered its first batch of high-strength Quend 1100 steel to Liebherr, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of construction machinery.

NLMK Clabecq (NLMK Group’s Belgian company) will supply steel to produce telescopic booms for a new type of Liebherr mobile cranes with a load capacity of 230 t. The prototype has been manufactured and exhibited at bauma 2019, an international trade fair for construction and mining machinery.

At bauma 2019, NLMK Group’s delegation led by Grigory Fedorishin, NLMK Group President and CEO, met with the leaders of Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH (mobile cranes manufacturer) and Liebherr-Purchasing Services GmbH and discussed the expansion of the partnership, in particular the development of the high-strength Quend steel grades and their application in upcoming Liebherr cranes.

Ilya Guschin, NLMK Group Vice President, Sales, said: “For several years, NLMK has been supplying products to Liebherr enterprises, and we are pleased to continue our active cooperation with our key customer. Quend 960 and Quend 1100 are complex grades of high-strength steel. They comply with exclusive standards for strength, surface quality, and thickness tolerances. The development of high value-added products is a strategic priority for NLMK Group.”

In 2018 high-strength Quend 960 and Quend 1100 grades (min. tensile strength 960 MPa and 1100 MPa, respectively) were homologated (tested for compliance) by leaders of the lifting equipment market: Liebherr, Manitowoc Cranes, and Tadano Faun GmbH. (NLMK/Ukrainian metal)
