If the Verkhovna Rada does not extend the scrap export duty and does not increase it to 42 euro per ton, it will have a catastrophic impact on the economy.

According to the Ukrmetallurgprom chairman Alexander Kalenkov, in Q1 scrap export from Ukraine grew 3.5-fold YoY, which resulted in the shortage on the market.

“And for electrometallurgists this is a catastrophe, as the charge for the electric arc furnaces is almost 100% scrap. 2 years ago, when the situation with scrap provision was critical, electrometallurgical manufacture in Dnipro stopped altogether”, he said.

Kalenkov believes that under the current economical situation the manufacture shut down is non-permissible.

“If the duty is not prolonged and is not increased, the budget could lose over 1 billion UAH. More than 30 countries limit scrap exports in this way or that. Especially those that have their own metal industry”, Kalenkov added. (Ukrainian metal)
