A new director has been appointed at Alchevsk Iron and Steel Works, situated in the pro-Russia militants-occupied territories.

According to the Alchevsk journalist Oksana Sabardina, now residing in Zaporozhye, the new director is Alexei Smirnov, scientist-metallurgist. He is also a representative of the Russian owners of the works and the vice-president of Ukrainian Association of Steelsmelters.

“His task is to restore operation of AMK, which is not working at present. The works is not under the militants’ management, and despite the Russian owners quite recently it used to work according to Ukrainian legislation”, she said.

The previous director Taras Shevchenko, who chaired the works in 2002-2007, has recently been appointed CEO of Mariupol Ilyich Iron and Steel Works. (Ukrainian metal)
