Russian steelmaker Severstal has temporarily shut down the Severnaya coal mine in the Komi Republic due to risks of new accidents, the company said in a statement.

In February, Severnaya collapsed at the depth of 748 meters, followed by more than five explosions in several days. Out of 110 miners who were working at the mine at that moment, 80 people were evacuated. The death toll estimate was 36 people, including rescuers.

“The safety of people is our main priority, that’s why no actions will be held at the Severnaya mine until we are fully confident of safety of any works at the facility”, the company said. (Prime/Ukrainian metal)
