The Ukrtruboprom Association has asked the Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to prohibit the export of ferrous scrap until the end of 2023.
In his letter the association CEO Georgy Polskiy said, that in 2020 the Ukrainian pipe industry was in a difficult situation. Because of the drop in oil prices and coronavirus limitation, consumption of pipes on world markets significantly decreased. This resulted in a drop in pipe output in Ukraine by 24.8%, to 538 thousand tons. The trend continued this year. In Q1, Ukraine decreased pipe manufacture by 4.7% YoY, to 129.1 thousand tons.
At the same time, scrap export grew in January-May almost 9-fold YoY, from 17 to 143 thousand tons. Until the end of the year, exports could exceed 1.5 million tons. (Ukrainian metal)
