Under the increased competition with Turkish manufacturers, decline in prices for metal products and rise in the cost of energy resources, PJSC ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih moved to more active measures to reduce costs and enhance energy efficiency. One of them is additional motivation programs for the employees. Thus, the company has launched a quarterly contest on energy efficiency, the winners of which will receive significant rewards for their suggestions.

Inventors of ideas can actually earn a second salary, and the company can get a significant benefit from the implementation of ideas. For example, one can reduce the consumption of reactive power, which annually costs UAH 22 million. The creation of a special program on one’s own efforts, that monitors the excessive consumption of “lazy” energy only in Oxygen Plant, will save about UAH 2.6 million per year and will also increase the service life of power equipment. Spreading of this project to other subdivisions of PJSC ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih will significantly increase the amount of the annual benefit.

Another example is the reduction of chemically treated water consumption supplied from HHP-2 to equipment cooling closed loop of KAR-30M No. 7. Reducing water consumption by 1.8 million cubic meters per month will bring the company about UAH 4 million per year. All that is needed is to install the available steam heat exchanger to condense the exhaust steam and to refill the loop.

Most of these proposals do not require significant costs, more and more proposals are coming from the employees with each passing month. Thanks to the active contribution of employees, in January-November 2018, 101 actions were implemented out of 108 planned for 2018. In addition, in January-November 2018, thanks to the energy-saving program, over 1 million GJ of energy was possible to save at PJSC ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih – Steelmaking Department and Energy Department became the main contributors. Only the upgrading of pumping units in Water Supply Shop helped to save electric power in the amount of more than 6.5 million kWh.

In December 2018, the company successfully underwent Energy Management audit, confirming the compliance to standard ISO 50001:2011. Its upgraded version of 2018 focuses on risk management. Internal auditors on energy management and representatives of the main energy consuming shops were familiarized with the new requirements of the standard. Thanks to the subject-oriented training, the employees of PJSC ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih were able to improve their skills and enlarge the application sphere of this standard. (AMKR/Ukrainian metal)
