The Ministry of Transport and Roads and the State Committee for Industry, Energy and Subsoil Use of Kyrgyzstan can’t agree on railway tariffs for the transportation of coal, the head of the State Committee Duishenbek Zilaliyev said on March 24, at a government meeting.

According to him, under the agreement on the application of unified tariffs for rail transportation, the Ministry of Transport increases the tariff for transportation of coal from 182 to 507 soms. When this tariff is applied, energy companies will receive a loss of 165 million soms. If the old tariff remains, the loss of 980 million soms will fall on Kyrgyz Temir Jolu.

Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbay Jeenbekov offered to transport coal from Kara-Keche deposit through Shamshi and Kegety passes. However, both the Ministry of Transport and the State Committee of Energy believe that this is impossible.

“We studied the issue. The length of the road is 291 km on Shamshi Pass, on the Kegety Pass – 281 km. Economy – 90 km. But there are three bridges, two of which must be rebuilt on Shamshi pass. This requires more than 50 million soms. On the side of the pass, the road is non-working. We need to build a new one. Its cost is estimated at $100 million,” Duishenbek Zilaliyev said.
