The probable shutdown of the largest coke producer in Europe – Avdiivka Coke and Chemical Works – could negatively affect the economy of the whole country.

According to the director of the Institute of economy and forecast of the National Academy of Sciences Valeriy Geyets, the blockade of coke, produced on the uncontrolled territories, as well as coal will result in the decrease of capacities of metal companies.

“And to have them fully loaded we will have to import coke. Which in its turn will affect the foreign currency balance”, he said.

Interruptions in Avdiivka Coke operation have already resulted in the problems with capacity loading at Mariupol metal works.

“I believe the situation for the economy on the whole and for the energy sector in particular is very dangerous. The first to suffer are the cities with large metal works, after them the rest of Ukraine will feel the negative effect of the blockade”, Geyets noted. (Ukrainian metal)
