In 2016 Ukrainian iron and steel works produced 23.5 million tons of pig iron, 24.2 million tons of steel and 21.4 million tons of rolled metal, all up by 8%, 6% and 6% YoY respectively.
Exports increased by 0.2% YoY, to 21.4 million tons, valued at $7.2 billion, down by 10.3% YoY.
Semi-finished products, rolled steel and metal raw materials were the main products exported, with 7.7 million tons, or 36.2%, 9.5 million tons, or 44.5%, and 3.7 million tons, or 17.3% respectively.
Rolled metal exports increased by 6.4%, of semis – dropped by 0.1%, and of raw materials – by 12.2%.
EU countries accounted for 33.5% of Ukrainian exports, Africa – 20.7%, Eastern Europe – 19.2%, Near East – 13.2%, CIS – 7.2%, and other countries – 6.2%.
In 2016 Ukraine imported 809.8 thousand tons of metal valued at $1.14 billion, up by 17.8% and by 42.8% YoY respectively. Rolled steel (616.2 thousand tons, or 76.1%), alloyed rolled steel (121.4 thousand tons, or 15%) and metal raw materials (61.8 thousand tons, or 7.6%) were the main products imported.
