The coal from the territory of the so-called Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics could become useless.
Ukraine was forced to buy coal from the occupied territories, but now could stop the purchases altogether.
According to the first deputy chairman of the BPP fraction Igor Kononenko, Ukraine had to buy the separatist coal in order not to leave the Ukrainians without electricity.
“When we buy coal from the occupied territories, we choose between the bad and the worst. It is bad to buy coal from the occupied territories, but it is worse still to leave our citizens without heat and electricity, especially in winter”, he said.
But he believes that the time has come when Ukraine is ready to stop buying coal from the occupied territories.
“The power balance in the country has stabilized, we could use the coal mined on our territory, in Western Ukraine in particular. We can also buy coal from SAR or from China. The price has decreased, so we could stop buying coal from the occupied territories altogether”, he said. (Ukrainian metal)
