Ukraine is in the primary stage of dialogue with the USA on the cancellation of the 25% duty on metal products, the trade representative of Ukraine Taras Kachka has said.
Until recently the dialogue with the USA has been focused on the resource agreement, but now Kyiv intensifies efforts in the duty issue. In particular, consultations took place this week with the US trade representative Jameson Greer.
“It is important for us to remove the metal duties, both the 25% one and the 10% one. It is quite possible that we will be able to do it. But right now we are in a starting position,” Kachka said.
The US administration imposed the 25% duty on all steel and aluminum imports from Ukraine in February. The increased tariffs came into effect in March.
The share of Ukrainian metal products in exports to the USA is 57.9%. According to the Ministry of Economy, this is $503.3 million of $869.1 million. In particular, pig iron exports amount to 940 thousand tons valued at $363.4 million, pipes – 92 thousand tons for $112.9 million, rods – 3.3 thousand tons for $15.2 million, wire – 3.9 thousand tons for $4 million and metal structures – 182 tons for $1.3 million.
