The director of Moldova Iron and Steel Works Sergey Kornev has assessed the work of this enterprise in 2023. He stressed that the principal achievements in this complicated year included backing the plant’s efficient work, implementation of a plan of investments for the production’s modernization, confirming, through international audits, of the quality of the products made at the plant, compliance of the plant’s management with the international standards and the continuation of the support for the enterprise’s employees and the region’s residents.

“On the purpose of a more pronounced reduction of the impact on the environment, a long-term ecological programme for 2019-2026 worth $30 million in all was approved. The key projects of this programme regard the protection of the quality of the atmospheric air, of the hydrographic basin and of the land resources, as well as our land’s management. Until the end of the investment programme, MMZ presently maintains the indexes of the maximally allowed concentration of noxious substances twice-thrice under the level of the legislative norms established,’’ Sergey Kornev said.

The MMZ leadership says that in 2023 it has sped up the pace of implementation of the programme on modernization and maintenance of the main equipment. Thus, in the rolling workshop, a new electric over-head traveling crane was put into operation. It is meant for loading, unloading of railway carriages and vehicles, as well as the depositing of finished products. At the same time, this year, a crane set on a truck was brought to the enterprise. The unique equipment in the region will allow carrying out repair works at height. This crane will be used for the construction of a new gas treatment installation to decrease air pollution. Also, a clampshell crane was delivered to the plant, meant for the transportation and loading of metal ores in the melting furnace.

According to the enterprise, the efficiency of the investments is confirmed by the international audits, which highlight the highest level of quality of management and production at MMZ.

“This year, MMZ has successfully gone through a re-certification made by the SGS (Switzerland) Company in the field of ecological management according to the standards ISO 14001:2015. The group of experts of the world leader in the field of the services of inspection, expertise, testing and certification, the SGS Swiss Company, visited the plant, in order to make an audit in the sector of ecological management of its work. As a result, the SGS experts confirmed that the production met the international standards and MMZ was re-certified according to the standard ISO 14001:2015, Ecological Management,” the enterprise’s director general said.

One of the famous organizations of certification, Certification Authority for Reinforcing Steel (CARES) from the United Kingdom, has finished a cycle of five years of verification of MMZ. Following the verification, the auditors of the CARES “pointed out, in particular, the high level and the maturity of the quality management system at MMZ, the high level of excellence of the technology for the production of steel and steel blades, the professionalism of the employees, the organization and endowment with modern equipment of the departments which control the quality of the finished products.”

At the beginning of the year, the MMZ’s Central Testing Laboratory was subjected to an annual audit of the MOLDAC National Accreditation Centre of Moldova for the compliance with the international quality standards. The audit “confirmed the technical competence and the conformity with the European and international quality standards of the MMZ’s Central Testing Laboratory.”

The director general of the enterprise, Sergey Kornev, stressed that, “despite a difficult year, MMZ for four decades has stayed not only a local, but also a regional strategical enterprise.” (Moldpres/Ukrainian metal)
