President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbai Jeenbekov has signed a law banning activities related to geological exploration of underground resources with the aim of prospecting, exploration and development of uranium and thorium deposits. Presidential press service reported.
The law was adopted by the Parliament of the Kyrgyz Republic on October 31.
“The purpose of the law is to protect the health of the population, land, water bodies, flora and fauna; ensure the rights of citizens to a favorable environment for life, work and leisure, as well as radiation and environmental safety in Kyrgyzstan,” the document says.
The law also does not allow import of uranium and thorium-containing raw materials and waste into Kyrgyzstan.
The law will enter into force in 15 days after its official publication. (24.kg/Ukrainian metal)
