Coal industry of Kazakhstan is sustaining losses after Russia imposed limitations on the export of coal to Ukraine.

According to the Association of mining and metallurgical enterprises, in June-September coalmining companies intended to ship 584.12 thousand tons of coal to Ukraine via Russia, but the Russian Ministry of Economic Development approved only 233.5 thousand tons. Thus losses on the exports of coal to Ukraine via Russia reached 60%.

Kazakhstan mostly exports coal through Russia, as it does not have access to sea.

In H1 the main purchasers of Kazakh coal were Russia (10.283 million tons), Switzerland (584.9 thousand tons), Ukraine (310 thousand tons), Cyprus (286.4 thousand tons) and Uzbekistan (127.5 thousand tons).

All in all exports totaled 11.938 million tons, down by 3% YoY. (Ukrainian metal)
