As a part of the international exhibition of equipment and technologies for urban and industrial emissions, dust and gas cleaning – Waste Air & Gas Management 2018 – Director of the Environmental Protection Department of PJSC ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih, Liana Maksimenko, shared her experience of implementation of the environmental monitoring systems at the company.
It covers five main subsystems: atmospheric air, industrial emissions from stationary emission sources, wastewater, tailings and soil.
Back in 2014, the company had three posts for monitoring the quality of atmospheric air at Steel Plant, Coke Plant and Mining. They were equipped with modern gas analyzers for measuring carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and dust meters (innovative dust measurement instrumentation in Ukraine). Starting from May 2017, the data is provided from these posts automatically on the company website.
“In 2018, we purchased and installed new software during the planned repair and calibration of monitoring items. The website of PJSC ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih at the city module Eco monitoring and the website for major situations in the Dnipropetrovsk region will receive online data from these posts automatically after completion of the work”, she said.
Monitoring of industrial emissions from enterprise sources is also conducted. Owing to the new investment projects, devices have been installed on 27 emission sources. This data, as well as technological data, is delivered to the post operators on site to analyze and provide necessary response. The company plans to introduce local environmental monitoring systems during the realization of investment projects on reconstruction of converters Nos. 1-3, sinter machines Nos. 1-3 of the second sinter shop, rotating calcined lime furnaces Nos. 1-5, blast furnace Nos. 9, etc.
In addition, automated monitoring system of wastewater is being introduced in PJSC ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih. A decade ago, three automated water-metering stations for recording wastewater volumes were also installed. They transmit the data online. In 2017-2018, seven indicators are continuously monitored by two automatic control stations. They are as follows: pH (hydrogen weight), chlorides, iron, petroleum products, suspended solids, temperature and volume. Analyzing equipment of leading world manufacturers – Hach Lange (Germany), Seibold Composer (Austria), SYSTEA (Italy), Sontek (USA) – is installed at the posts. Necessary commissioning and acceptance testing have already been carried out. (AMKR/Ukrainian metal)
