Ukrmetallurgprom is asking the government, law enforcers and the Ukrzaliznytsia to take measures to stop supplying Ukrainian scrap to Moldova Iron and Steel Works, situated in the unrecognized republic of Transnistria.
“The level of scrap provision to local metal companies in August was 89% and in 8 months – 98%. That’s mostly due to the fact that despite the increase of the scrap export duty to 42 euro per ton, exports are still growing. While in January-August 2017 Ukraine exported 257 thousand tons of scrap, this year the exports exceeded 300 thousand tons. And a considerable part of scrap goes to MMZ”, the enterprise said.
Last year Ukraine exported 486 thousand tons of scrap, with Moldova Iron and Steel Works accounting for 270 thousand tons, or 56%.
“And the situation is worsening – in January-April Ukraine exported 216 thousand tons of scrap, with 135 thousand tons, or 63%, to the Moldova works”, it added. (Ukrainian metal)
