In April scrap shortage in Ukraine totaled 34 thousand tons, or 12% of the metal companies need.
“With scrap deficiency imports of Russian hot-briquetted iron (HBI) increased 9.6 times”, said Interpipe.
Local market received 264 thousand tons of scrap, while it needed 298 thousand tons.
“Ukraine wasn’t able to satisfy its needs because of the exports which totaled 83 thousand tons”, the company added.
Scrap procurement in April reached 346 thousand tons, up from 264 thousand tons in March, but still down by 24% YoY (456 thousand tons). In January-April Ukraine procured 963 thousand tons of scrap, down by 33% YoY (1443 thousand tons).
Systematical shortage of scrap on the local market resulted in the increase of HBI imports, used to substitute scrap. According to the State Fiscal Service, HBI imports in January-April went up 9.6 times YoY, from 2.8 thousand tons to 26.8 thousand tons. All HBI comes from Russia. (Ukrainian metal)
