In the early 2015 Ukrainian metal industry was on the brink of halting because of the limestone shortage, mined in Crimea and Donetsk region.

Some years ago Ukrainian metal companies importing limestone was something unnatural. The country operated several mine groups with capacities far surpassing the needs of metal companies.

But after the annexation of Crimea and the occupation by the Russia-supported terrorists of the part of Donbass, the access to the largest limestone deposits was mostly blocked, resulting in the shortages of once freely available raw materials.

According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, in the first three months of the year Ukraine imported 513 thousand tons of limestone worth 11.1 million. During the same period a year ago there was almost no import of this material, while the whole 2014 saw just 16.8 thousand tons of limestone worth $378 thousand tons imported.

This year the largest suppliers of limestone to Ukraine were Romania, Poland, Slovakia, and strangely Russia. Smaller batches were supplied by the UAE, Spain and Turkey. (Ukrainian Metal)
