According to the data issued by the Ukrainian Metal Traders Association, in January to September 2009 the country rolled steel consumption was down by 45.4% YoY to approximately 3.695 million tons. Meanwhile, during the period in question, imports of rolled products to Ukraine went down by 70.7% YoY to 463,904 tons.
Accordingly, in January to September this year Ukrainian pipemaking companies reduced purchases of domestic and imported rolled products by 35.9% YoY to about 1.149 million tons, local construction companies cut purchases by 70.8% YoY to 58,269 tons, hardware producers decreased their purchases by 36.6% YoY to 312,700 tons while railway companies increased their purchases by 1.3% YoY to 67,462 tons. Furthermore, Ukrainian steel traders, including the smaller companies, reduced their purchases of domestic and imported rolled steel products by 57.1% YoY to 981,617 tons, machine-building companies decreased purchases by 68% YoY to 389,615 tons while mining and metallurgical companies increased their purchases by 6.1% YoY to 644,339 tons.
In January to September 2009, traders share in the total rolled steel consumption volume on the Ukrainian domestic market amounted to 27%, the share of pipemaking companies amounted to 31%, the share of machine-building companies reached 11%, the share of mining and metallurgical companies amounted to 17%, the share of hardware producers was 8%, the share of construction companies stood at 2%, the share of railway companies was 2% while the share of other companies also amounted to 2%.
