The government of Armenia has prolonged the prohibition of exporting ferrous and non-ferrous metal scrap and waste for six months to support domestic steel manufacture and metal industry.
The ban was previously extended on December 21, 2023.
Armenia does not have effective iron ore deposits, so local metal plants rely on scrap procured domestically.
Since the ban was imposed in 2020, steel manufacture has increased considerably – in 2022 Armenia produced around 120 thousand tons of rolled metal.
Investments in steel industry in 2022-2023 amounted to $100 million, which created 550-750 new jobs and resulted in increased use of local scrap. (Ukrainian metal)
