Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has signed an investment contract with Italian company Danieli & Officine Meccaniche S.p.A. to modernize MMK’s rolled section workshop’s double-strand mill No. 170.

The value of the contract for the supply of technical documentation, equipment, installation supervision services, and operational training amounts to EUR 5.5 million. The project is expected to be completed in 2019.

The project provides for the modernization of the cooling roller conveyer by replacing each line of existing fans with sixteen new ones. They will be equipped with temperature and bearing vibration sensors, motors with inverters as well as motors attached directly to the impeller shaft. After modernization, the heat irradiance of the conveyer for the cooling of the wire rod will amount to more than 200 W/square meter, and the air consumption for the fans on the roller conveyer will increase to 125 N cubic meter/h. The total additional installed power will amount to around 4,500 kW for both lines.

The modernization will allow the air-cooling line to produce end products with properties corresponding to global and Russian standards for high carbon steel. The refurbishment of the mill will serve to increase the content of sorbitized perlite in the microstructure of the rolled high-carbon steel, to improve the mechanical properties of the metal, to reduce the unevenness of the microstructure, the unevenness of time resistance, and will ensure the production of rolled metal from high-carbon steel (0.45-0.85% carbon) with a diameter from 5.5 mm to 16 mm with a maximum speed of 90 m/s and the maximum productivity of the mill of up to 130 tons per hour. Moreover, the modernization of the mill will allow for the reduction in downtime associated with repair and servicing of equipment.

Fine wire mill 170 was commissioned in 2006. With its launch at MMK, a radical refurbishment of the rolling mills was completed, thanks to which MMK received the most modern equipment for the production of long rolled products with a total capacity of up to 2 million tons per year. The unit was supplied by the Italian company Danieli. Mill 170 has a capacity of up to 765,000 tons per year and is intended for the production of wire rods with a diameter of 5.5-22 mm, as well as reinforcement bars with diameters from 8 to 16 mm. One of the main customers of the mill’s products is MMK Group’s subsidiary, the metal ware and calibration plant MMK-METIZ. (MMK/Ukrainian metal)
