As part of the program for monitoring employees’ physical state and increasing the occupational health and safety level at the operational sites, the Norilsk Nickel is planning to have installed full-height turnstiles with contactless ethanol breathalyzers at the Polar Division’s Mayak mine by the end of the year.
These are full-height turnstiles equipped with fixed alcohol detection devices, identification and CCTV systems. This equipment will prevent access of employees under the influence of alcohol to underground workings. The pilot project involving the turnstiles installation was implemented in 2014 at Oktyabrsky mine. Later, the turnstiles were assembled at sites of Komsomolsky mine.
For the period of operation, the monitoring systems have proved their effectiveness without additional labor inputs and outstaffers involvement. Work discipline has been significantly improved in terms of both: the mines workers, and contractors’ employees.
In 2017, the program will be implemented in other operations of the Polar Division. For instance, the company is planning to install these systems at Zapolyarny, Kayerkansky and Taimyrsky mines. (Norilsk Nickel/Ukrainian metal)
