Russia: NLMK embarks on design and site preparation for new waste energy recovery power plant

NLMK Lipetsk, NLMK Group’s flagship production site, has embarked on the development of project documentation and site preparation for the construction of a new recovery power plant running on by-product gases from steelmaking operations.

The power plant will have a capacity of 300 MW. NLMK Group plans to invest 35 million rubles into the project.

The project will enable a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (CO2) by 650,000 tons per year. The construction of a new recovery power plant running on by-product gases from steelmaking operations is in line with industry BAT’s and advances the objective of Russia’s national Clean Air initiative as part of The Environment project.

Approximately 50% of all energy consumed at NLMK is generated using secondary resources. Blast furnace gas and coke gas, by-products of blast furnace and coke oven battery operations, are used as fuel.

In 2019 NLMK Lipetsk energy self-sufficiency was around 64%. Following the launch of the new recovery power plant this indicator will increase to 95%. (NLMK/Ukrainian metal)
