At the end of 2018, ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih was one of the plants with the lowest frequency rate (0.38) among all ArcelorMittal’s assets in 14 countries (the third place). Benchmarking was done among the companies with the highest number of man-hours worked – over 16 million. Moreover, ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih has the lowest frequency rate considering internal personnel (per 1 thousand employees) among five companies within mining and steelmaking complex of Ukraine.

22 lost time injuries (LTIs) among internal personnel and contractors were registered in 2018. Three of them were fatalities (one ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih’s employee and two contractors). The number of accidents among internal personnel has been reduced – 15 accidents versus 18 in 2017. Injuries were mainly caused by moving, flying and rotating parts, equipment components and objects. The second major cause was falling and collapsing structures and objects, materials, rock and landslides. The third major type of accidents is falling and transport accidents.

Most of the injuries happened due to organizational issues, particularly violation of health and safety instructions. More than half of injured employees (54%) are not newcomers but experienced employees that have been working at the company for more than five years. The root cause of injuries is performance of usual activities with less attention during the work.

On October 1-4, 2018, certifying organization TMS conducted a recertification audit of ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih’s safety management system for compliance with the requirements of the international standard OHSAS 18001: 2007. Following the results of the audit, the company was recertified.

Serhiy Teslyuk, Director of Occupational Health and Safety Department, ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih: “Our key priority remains zero frequency rate at work. Therefore, we insist on that one shall not ignore health and safety requirements and rules. It is our demand to both internal personnel and all contractors, with whom we cooperate implementing an ambitious investment program”.

In 2018, ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih invested 396.2 million UAH in occupational health and safety (in 2017 – 316.7 million UAH). Expenses amounted to more than 19 thousand UAH per employee. (AMKR/Ukrainian metal)
