The Jamaican government can cancel Russian aluminum producer RUSAL’s control over West Indies Alumina Company (Windalco) due to the recent U.S. sanctions against the company, Minister of Transport and Mining Robert Montague declared.

“Despite UC RUSAL’s intention to continue to operate as normal, the Ministry of Transport and Mining’s analyses indicate that normal operations will become increasingly difficult, especially if the company refuses to dilute its ownership,” Montague said.

On April 23 the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said that the U.S. could lift sanctions against RUSAL if businessman Oleg Deripaska ceded control. (Prime/Ukrainian metal)
