Kyrgyzstan: radiation level in Ak-Tyuz after emergency at mining company normal

Radiation level in Ak-Tyuz village, Kemin district, after a break in a pipe with chemical waste remains normal, the State Committee for Industry, Energy and Subsoil Use reported.

According to its information, a sharp drop in air temperature caused a break in the joint on the pipe of the pulp feed-line, running from the concentrating plant Ak-Tyuz to the tailing dump.

“After the break, a certain amount of waste poured into the soil and in Kichi-Kemin River. The leakage was eliminated within 20 minutes, a grader, removing the top layer of soil, cleaned the road. Then this mass was transported to the tailing dump. The same day representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the State Ecological and Technical Inspectorate measured the radiation level in the area of ​​the accident. The background radiation level was not exceeded. Employees of the State Agency for Environment Protection and Forestry for Chui region and the Sanitary and Epidemiological stations of Kemin district took water and soil samples and sent them to the laboratory for analysis,” the ministry informed.

The committee informed that the employees of the State Inspection would leave for the scene to investigate and determine the causes of the accident.

Earlier, local residents reported that there was a breakthrough in a pipe running along the road from the gold recovery plant to the dam of the tailing dump, and chemical waste poured into the river and spilled along the highway.

According to the committee, Kuranjaylyau deposit is located in Kemin district of Chui region. The license was issued to Geo Resource CJSC.
