PJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works has commissioned the continuous hot-dip galvanizing unit No. 3. The unit will increase MMK’s capacity for the production of galvanized steel by almost 20%, to more than 2 million tons a year.

The unit is designed to produce zinc-coated products through the hot-dip galvanizing of cold-rolled, thin-sheet, low-carbon steel. Products from this rolled metal are high-margin, more reliable and last longer. The main consumers of such products are the construction and packaging industries.

The unit was built on the site of strip rolling plant No. 11. The contract for the supply of equipment for the new unit was concluded with the SMS group (Germany) in July 2015. The capacity of the new unit is 450,000 tons per year, and it will use the cold-rolled strip without coating, produced at strip rolling plant No. 11. The unit employs 140 people.

The total cost of its construction, which began in September 2015, was around RUB 6.8 billion, of which nearly RUB 3 billion was for construction and installation work. During the construction, more than 3,500 tons of metal structure were installed, about 1,500 piles were fixed, around 12,400 tons of building envelopes were erected and about 15,000 cubic meters of foundations were filled. The general designer was OAO Magnitogorsk Gipromez, and the general contractor was OJSC Prokatmontazh.

The implementation of this project is in line with MMK’s strategy to increase its share of high value added advanced processing products. (MMK/Ukrainian metal)
