Ukraine: EU asked to strengthen sanctions against Russian metal

The National Association of Mining Industry of Ukraine has called on the European Union to take active measures to stop importing Russian iron ore products and ferrous metals.

In 2023, Russia sold EUR 3 billion worth of iron ore and ferrous metals.

“We sent letters to the European Commission President, Minister of Foreign Affairs of France and other influential European actors. The EU has sanctioned Russian products, but the sanctions are incomplete. As a result, the import of iron ore products and ferrous metals from Russia is still high, and this means billions of euros to fuel the Russian military machine,” the association said.

Russian iron ore products – sinter ore, concentrate and pellets – are not sanctioned.

“Ukraine, together with other European countries, is prepared to replace Russian products on the European market. And this must demonstrate the partner relations and support for Ukrainian business. We call on the EU for decisive actions and are counting on their understanding and support,” the association noted. (Ukrainian metal)
