Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) won the XV industry competition titled “Metal and Mining Enterprises with Highly Effective CSR”.
The competition participants were 61 metal and mining enterprises. For the second year in a row, MMK is amongst the winners in the category “Environmental Protection and Resource Management”.
MMK’s investments in environment protection last year exceeded 4 billion rubles. The company undertook a number of large ecological projects including: the reconstruction of the sulfur capture systems at the sinter plant, the reconstruction of the gas-cleaning unit at the double-hearth furnace of the electric arc furnace facility, and the construction of aspiration systems for casting beds at blast-furnaces Nos. 9 and 10. The company’s investments in environmental protection activities for 2018 are expected to amount 5.5 billion rubles. By 2025, MMK plans to have allocated more than 38 billion rubles to environmental protection projects.
At MMK much attention is paid to the issues of resource conservation and energy efficiency. In particular, it is actively undertaking the recycling of slag which will allow it to reduce the consumption of purchased iron ore raw materials and increase the share of secondary material resources in the burden from sinter production. In 2017 alone 11.4 million tons of slag were recycled at specialized plants. Currently, MMK is completing the construction of an iron-containing tailings enrichment line at slurry storage No. 2.
The results of the XV industry competition “Metal and Mining Enterprises with Highly Effective CSR – 2018” were summarized by the Board of the Russian Association of Metal and Mining Industrialists and by the Executive Committee of the Central Council of the Russian Metal and Mining Trade Union (in conjunction with the Department of Metallurgy and Materials of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia).
