Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has once again been included in Living Planet channel and the Modern Media Research Institute (MOMRI)’s bi-annual list of the top ten Russian companies in the fuel and energy and metallurgical sectors for environmental performance.

Thanks to good results in the second half of 2017, MMK placed 9th on the list, up one place compared to the previous six-month period. In total, 33 companies are included in the rating.

Among MMK’s most significant environmental projects, the judges were particularly impressed by the construction of aspiration systems for casting beds at blast furnaces Nos. 9 and 10, as well as the campaign to plant “A Thousand Trees for Children” in Magnitogorsk.

Over the last year, MMK’s investments in the environment exceeded 4 billion rubles – the highest amount in recent years. The plant was awarded a diploma from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation in December 2017 for its environmental protection efforts.

The Living Planet and MOMRI rating is intended to demonstrate the importance of environmental awareness for Russian companies and is based on an objective review of the companies’ environmental initiatives. MMK, which has always held one of the leading positions on the list, successfully implemented more than 60 eco-projects in the last year alone. The constant reduction and prevention of the plant’s harmful impact on the environment and introduction of the best available technologies are the most important elements of MMK’s strategy, ensuring the long-term and sustainable development of the company. From now until 2025, the company intends to allocate more than 38 billion rubles to the implementation of environmental policies. (MMK/Ukrainian metal)
