Ukraine: scrap export duty increase to help revive industry

According to the Ukrmetallurgprom president Alexander Kalenkov, the decree on scrap export duty increase, signed by the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, will play a major role in industry revival.

“This decree is very useful for Ukraine, as we feel a sharp shortage of scrap. In 2015 Ukraine exported 1.2 million tons of scrap, it was an anti-record for the last 10 years. And the shortage of scrap on the local level reached 0.86 million tons. Our metal companies had to decrease capacities, and some even reached the brink of extinction, as the increase in product cost (due to the replacement of scrap with expensive pig iron) resulted in the loss of competitiveness on the world market”, he said.

Poroshenko has signed a decree that increases the export duty of ferrous scrap from 10 euro per ton to 30 euro. The decree also cancels ferrous scrap export contracts registration. (Ukrainian metal)
