Tajikistan: Dushanbe and Baku working on scheme for counter supplies of alumina and aluminum

Tajikistan is ready to purchase alumina from the Azerbaijani side for the needs of aluminum production, the Ambassador of Tajikistan to Azerbaijan Ilkhom Abdurahmon says.

The diplomat noted that specialized enterprises of both countries – the Tajik Aluminum Company (TALCO) and Azeraluminium – had long ago concluded a cooperation agreement.

As the ambassador clarified, about a month ago, a regular meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation at the level of deputy prime ministers was held in the Azerbaijani capital, during which the topic of aluminum was also discussed.

“During this meeting, certain agreements were reached. This issue was discussed, the parties demonstrated mutual interest, especially since at the moment the cost of aluminum had increased slightly. Taking into account logistics possibilities, the issue of supplying aluminum to Azerbaijan may soon be worked out. As far as I know, the Azerbaijani side has its own aluminum plant and independently produces this metal. However, in Azerbaijan there is also a need to import aluminum, and Tajikistan is always ready to export it via mutually acceptable prices,” said Abdurahmon.

The diplomat emphasized that the final decisions remained with the two companies, since “we are talking about commercial structures that will independently assess the profitability of supplies, taking into account transport and logistics costs”.

“As for strategic cooperation in the production sector, the option of resuming the work of the Ganja Alumina Refinery is also being explored. If its launch or modernization begins next year, Tajikistan will be ready to purchase alumina from Azerbaijani partners. From a logistics point of view, this is very beneficial for us. I believe this will be an excellent step for the import of alumina to Tajikistan and the parallel export of aluminum to Azerbaijan,” the ambassador emphasized. (Report)
