ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih summarized results on safety in 2019. During last year company investments into labor and industrial safety increased by a fourth compared to 2018 and amounted to 503,4 million UAH. Expenditures on each employee exceeded 25 thousand UAH. The company will continue investing into improvement of work conditions, supply of overalls and safety shoes, PPE for employees, as well as carrying out measures aimed to decrease injury rate.
30 LTIs were registered in 2019 at the company amongst own personnel and contractors. Four of them were fatal accidents (one – with an employee of ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih and three – with employees of contractors). A number of accidents amongst own personnel was 16 vs. 15 in 2018. General Lost Time Accident Frequency Rate in ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih in 2019 (including subsidiary companies in Ukraine) was 0.53. Injuries were mainly connected with impact of high temperatures on employees. On the second place – operation of moving, scattering and rotating details, parts of equipment and objects, as well as injuries resulting from fall, collapse and failure of objects, materials, rocks and soil.
Majority of injuries happened because of organizational reasons – violation of work and industrial discipline. 40% of injured employees are not newcomers in production, their work experience in their job is more than 10 years. A reason of traumatism was that routine actions were carried out with less attention during work. Major part of injures happened to young employees with work experience in production up to 1 year. This category of employees requires acute control over compliance with safety requirements and rules. This is required in ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih both from own personnel and all contractors as a part of cooperation.
From September 17 till 19, 2019 TMS, a certification authority, carried out an inspection audit of a safety management system of ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih as for compliance with requirements of an international standard OHSAS 18001:2007.
