Ukraine: AMKR informs public about the intention to obtain permits for emissions from Metallurgical Production and Mining Department

ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih held public hearings on the intention to obtain air emissions permit from stationary sources of the industrial site No. 1 of Metallurgical Production and Underground Mining Department. The hearings were held with the participation of public environmental NGOs, deputies of the City Council, the residents of the city, as well as experts from ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih and Research and Development Establishment for Industrial and Sanitary Gas Treatment (UkrNIIOGas).

For Mining Department, the permits for emissions, acting today, the company obtained 5 years ago, in 2014. Their validity term expires in April. According to these permits, ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih needed to reconstruct gas-cleaning plants (GCPs) in order to achieve the guideline for maximum admissible emission. The company carried out these obligations completely: 4 GCPs have been reconstructed and 3 dust exhausting plants have been constructed. In particular, the inefficient Cyot dust-trapping cyclones have been replaced by modern STSN-40. Automated environmental monitoring system is installed at each GCP. Investments amounted more than UAH 27 million. Up to date, all 15 GCPs of Mining Department comply with state standards.

For Metallurgical Production, the company submitted a report on the main stationary sources of emissions, taking into account the facilities of new construction and reconstruction (new CCMs, LSM-250-4, interdepartment gas pipelines of COG, BFG and NG, etc.). The implementation of investment projects is aimed at achieving state standards and stepwise load decrease on the sanitary protection zone.

The last emission permit for industrial site No. 1 of Metallurgical Production was obtained in December 28, 2016. The company carried out all the obligations on this permit. During this period, the following has been completed: ahead-of-schedule – GCP reconstruction behind rotary kiln No. 2 of Lime Plant, GCP construction behind converter No.4 followed by CO combustion at BOF Shop flare. Besides, advanced steel production technology at THF unit No. 6 with fugitive emissions minimizing has been improved, as well as two GCPs from mortar preparation units and dry grinding mill No. 1 of Repair Production have been reconstructed.

After discussion and open dialogue with the public, ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih is ready to hand over all the necessary documentation to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Ukraine for obtaining permits for emissions from Metallurgical Production and Mining Department in accordance with legislative requirements.
