On July 8, 1933 the first open-hearth furnace of MMK produced its first steel. This was the beginning of the steel smelting complex at the company.
By the late 1980s MMK operated three open-hearth shops, which comprised 35 furnaces. Steel output reached 16 million tons.
In 1990 the company commissioned the oxygen-converter shop.
Now the shop has three converters with the annual output of over 10 million tons per year. This is the most powerful converter shop in the world. By April 18, 2017 it had produced 200 million tons of steel.
Open-hearth shops Nos. 2 and 3 were decommissioned.
In 2006 the open-hearth shop No. 1 became the electric arc shop – with two largest arc furnaces producing a total of 4 million tons of steel per year. In 12 years the shop produced 31.5 million tons of steel.
In 85 years MMK has produced over 800 million tons of steel. (Ukrainian metal)
