A delegation of the European Union and the International Atomic Energy Agency has arrived in Kyrgyzstan to study uranium heritage sites in Mailuu-Suu town, Jalal-Abad region.
It is expected that experts will visit the tailing dumps in Ailampa-Sai, Kulmen-Sai, Koy-Tash valleys, as well as tailing dumps Nos. 6, 20 and 21. The specialists will be informed about the situation on the sites and works on the reclamation of the tailing dumps.
There are 23 tailing dumps with a total volume of uranium production waste of 2 million cubic meters and 13 mountain dumps with a waste volume of 1 million cubic meters on the territory of Mailuu-Suu town.
An average gamma radiation rate on the surface of tailings is 30-50 microroentgen per hour, and at anomalous sites the indicator reaches 500 micro-roentgen per hour. On the territory of Kyrgyzstan the average level of natural radiation is 25.5 microroentgen per hour. (24.kg/Ukrainian metal)
