Ukraine: DMZ shut down

Donetsk Iron and Steel Works, a part of Donetskstal, has shut down its blast furnace No. 1 because of the absence of iron ore raw materials caused by the railroad blockade.

On February 26, the daily shift smelted 400 thousand tons of pig iron, and the BF was shut down.

The BF-1 used to produce 1.4-1.7 thousand tons of pig iron daily. The second blast furnace has been shut down a long time ago.

“The reason for the shut down is the absence of iron ore raw materials. We get coke from Avdiivka Coke and Chemical Works, so there is no problem in this respect”, a company representative said.

In January DMZ decreased pig iron output by 12.2% YoY, to 43 thousand tons. In December 2016 it produced 51 thousand tons of pig iron.

Steel is not produced, as the open-hearth manufacture was shut down in April 2012.

In 2016 DMZ produced 778 thousand tons of pig iron, up by 38.2% YoY. (Ukrainian metal)
